The Dirty Truth About Being Tired & Exhausted

On a scale of 0-10, where do you land with respect to tiredness or exhaustion? Zero is not tired, 5 is tired, 10 is exhausted.

 If you are 5-10, is this a momentary state or is this a persistent state of being? Can you remember the last time you were not tired or exhausted?

 I think of tiredness and exhaustion very much like I think about pain. Acute pain has a purpose—to let you know there’s a problem that needs to be addressed ASAP. For example, acute pain occurs when you break a bone, when you cut yourself, when your gallbladder or appendix is inflamed or infected, etc. Chronic pain, on the other hand, really doesn’t have any purpose. You are already aware of the fact that something is wrong. Ongoing, unmanaged chronic pain can result in anxiety, depression, weight gain, weight loss, insomnia, drug seeking behavior, along with other symptoms.

Tiredness is the acute response. It is your body, mind and/or spirit trying to get your attention to slow down and take rest ASAP. Exhaustion is the chronic state of severe tiredness–tiredness that has not been addressed for an extended period. It often results in you not really recognizing yourself and existing instead of living. When we have been exhausted for so long, we can’t even begin to imagine how our life could be different.
